Welcome to my blog post: Understanding Your Values To Change Your Life.

For those of you who have had Life Coaching before, you will know what I mean by Values.

For those of you who haven’t let me explain:

They are:

  1. Your Life Principles
  2. Your judgement on what is important in life.
  3. Your deeply held beliefs on standards of behaviour
  4. Your moral compass
  5. Behavioural traits that are important to you
  6. You when you are when at your best.
  7. Essence of who you are OR who you want to be!
  8. It’s a declaration of how you will OR do conduct yourself in life

They are a list of nouns that you pick and use as the backbone of your Coaching sessions.

If you are stuck or looking for guidance on something, your Coach will often ask you

“How would you act if in accordance with your Values?”

I struggled with understanding what they were when I was training to be a Coach, in fact I still find them fairly difficult to succinctly explain hence my long list above!

But now I know what mine are, I find them invaluable, particularly when faced with a tricky scenario.

Every time I’m faced with a situation and I’m not sure how to react, I will check back to them and then proceed in line with what they are.

So, simple, yet soooo effective.

My Values are the following:

  • Integrity
  • Kindness
  • Compassion
  • Considerate
  • Authenticity
  • Love

My Values are hopefully who I am (if a friend was to describe me I would hope that they use my six Values) OR who I’m aspiring to be.

So, every day, as far as possible, I will conduct myself in accordance with the Values above.

If something doesn’t feel right, I will check back to them.

If I need to make an important decision, I will check back to them.

If a friend’s behaviour is disturbing me I will check back to them. Is she or he acting in accordance with my Values? If not, is this a friend I need to continue to be friends with?

If my boss has asked me to do something and I feel uncomfortable, is what she has asked me to do in line with my Values? If not, I won’t do it.

Make sense?

So, take a look at the list of Values here and pick out the ones you are drawn too.

Going forward fall back on your Values in everyday life.

They will help you to understand what drives you.

They will provide clarity on how you should conduct yourself, the decisions you make, who you decide to be friends with and how you live.

Remember, Your Values can provide the compass to get to who you want to be.

I hope this has helped.
